Barrick to close Lagunas Norte mine in Peru
Barrick Gold, (NYSE: GOLD) (TSX: ABX) the world’s second largest producer of the precious metals, on Wednesday said it will place its Lagunas Norte mine in Peru on care and maintenance while the team assesses the sulphide resource potential. It is the latest announcement outlining the company’s exploration strategy in Latin America.
The Toronto-based gold miner has been trying sell the Lagunas Norte mine since 2017, but talks with potential buyers have been fruitless as the mine is nearing the end of its life with a high closure cost built into its price tag.
Following a tour of the company’s Latin American operations in January, Barrick boss Mark Bristow decided they were looking at “a new plan” for Lagunas Norte and suspended plans to sell its Peru assets. Another mine in Peru, Pierina, is also marked for closure.
Barrick had booked a $405 million impairment charge on Lagunas Norte last year, which resulted in a $431 million net loss in the September quarter. Production in 2018 totaled 245,000 ounces of gold at an all-in sustaining cost of $636/oz.

Champion Iron achieves record quarterly production at Bloom Lake
Champion Iron Ltd (TSX, ASX: CIA) announced today that the company posted strong operational and financial results for the first quarter ended June 30, breaking quarterly production records at the Bloom Lake mine and recording its highest ever operating cash flow.
During the quarter, Bloom Lake delivered almost 2 million wet metric tonnes of high-grade (66.2%) iron ore concentrate, compared to 1.54 million in the same period last year. Recovery rate reached 82.% — another historical record dating back to 2010 when the mine was first commissioned.
Higher volumes and a premium over the benchmark iron ore price helped to boost the Quebec-based miner’s revenue by 50% to C$227.9 million in the first quarter, compared to C$150.7 million in the same period of the prior fiscal year.
Company cash flow after working capital totaled C$91.9 million, the highest ever recorded during a quarter. Net income increased substantially to C$74.2 million, compared with C$20.7 million in the prior-year period.
In May, Champion Iron secured a C$185 million financing and acquired the remaining 36.8% interest in the Bloom Lake project for C$211 million.
The Bloom Lake iron ore project is located approximately 13 km north of Fermont, Québec, and 10 km north of the Mont Wright iron ore mining complex owned by ArcelorMittal Mines Canada.
Champion Iron is currently working towards a phase 2 expansion of Bloom Lake, which would double output to 15 million tonnes of 66.2% iron concentrate annually.

Benchmark Metals stock jumps on new drill results
Benchmark Metals Inc. (TSXV: BNCH) today reported results from the initial 6 drill holes at the Lawyers Trend (Cliff Creek zone), part of the company’s ongoing drill program to expand the current resources at its Lawyers gold-silver project. Five of the holes returned 2-3 discrete mineralized intercepts within the same hole ranging from 1 to 46 metres.
“The Benchmark geological team has hit targets on 100% of the drill holes,” Benchmark Metals CEO John Williamson says. “This includes intervals of intense alteration, multi-phase veining with mineralization intersected in all drill holes. “
Shares of Benchmark Metals surged by more than 10% at market open on Tuesday. The company has a market cap of C$20.2 million.
Drilling will also commence soon at the subparallel AGB zone, where Benchmark is looking to establish new resources. The company had previously reported historical high-grade drill intersections from this zone: 108.36 g/t gold and 911.2 g/t silver over 7 metres and 6.96 g/t gold and 254.7 g/t silver over 57.9 metres.
The Lawyers property, covering 127 square kilometres of prospective rocks, is situated in the Stikine Terrane of northern British Columbia, and falls within the prolific, mineral-endowed ‘Golden Horseshoe’.
A five-year work and exploration permit was recently granted to Benchmark Metals by the BC government. To date, the company has collected 141 rock grab samples, 160 trench samples, and 1,491 soil samples from across the property.

Canada’s Japan Gold extends footprint in the Asian country, buys three projects
Canada’s Japan Gold Corp (TSX-V:JG) is growing its portfolio in the Pacific nation with the acquisition of three new projects, comprising a total of 23,400 acres near current and past-producing gold mines in the country’s south.
The Vancouver-based miner said the land package, which covers 76 applications in the Southern Kyushu Epithermal Gold Province, takes the total number of projects it currently has in Japan to 18.
The new assets area located near current and past-producing gold mines, such as Hishikari, which produced 7.6 million ounces at average grades of 30 to 40 grams of gold per ton (g/t) when it was operational.
Similar grades were mined at other projects in the region, including at the Yamagano operation, which churned out almost one million ounces at 17.4 g/t gold during its mine-life.
In total, the Southern Epithermal Gold Province has produced over 11 million ounces of gold.
The company said in a release that the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry has accepted the new applications, allowing Japan Gold to commence surface exploration.
At the same time, the miner is ditching most of its copper-gold lithocap projects in the region, except the Kamitsue project in Kyushu, which hosts a gold-rich porphyry system believed to have potential for shallow mineralization.
Japan closed all of its gold mines during World War II, reallocating workers to base metal mines and factories. After the war, it only re-opened 12 of the 76 mines it used to have.
It wasn’t until 2012 that the country let foreign mining companies come to its shores for the first time in its history.

Miners to invest $177.2 million in environmental programs in Mexico
The Mexican Chamber of Mines or Camimex announced that total investments in environmental programs carried out by companies affiliated to the group will add up to $177.2 million in 2019, almost a 17% increase from the $151.5 million invested in 2018.
According to Camimex, most of the programs focused on the protection of certain areas’ biodiversity and natural resources, freshwater management, reforestation, renewable energy sources, and capacity building.
The Chamber also reported that, in the past year, 111 companies took part in a clean industry program organized by the Federal Prosecutor for Environmental Protection, and five of them were awarded a certificate of environmental excellence, which means that their performance goes above and beyond what is established in the environmental regulations they have to comply with.
“Mexico’s mining sector is a very well regulated economic activity in our country and companies affiliated to Camimex comply with the more than 1,275 laws, bylaws, regulations, and international treaties to which Mexico has subscribed. Additionally, they comply with the requirements and conditions that the federal environmental authority establishes in Environmental Impact Assessments,” the group said in a media statement. “Our affiliates will continue to invest in improving their environmental and social programs that support Mexico’s sustainable development goals.”

OceanaGold halts Philippines mine on lack of supplies
Australia’s OceanaGold Corp (TSX, ASX: OGC) has halted mining at its Didipio gold and copper asset in the Philippines, as an ongoing dispute with a provincial government over its license to operate is negatively impacting the operation.
The mid-tier gold producer said that, while processing continues, underground extraction work has stopped due to the “depletion of consumable mining supplies”.
Earlier this month, the governor of Nueva Vizcaya province directed local government units to restrain OceanaGold’s operations. As part of the move, supplies have not been able to access the mine site.
The miner reacted by filing an injunction against any restraint to operations, but the provincial has court denied, it said.
The company will now appeal this decision to the Philippine Court of Appeals, in Manila.
OceanaGold has overcome conflict with the Philippines government in the past, including a 2017 plan by former environment and natural resources secretary — Regina Lopez — to suspend several mining operations in the country.
While the miner waits for the renewal of its operating license, the country’s industry regulator, Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB), confirmed earlier this month that Oceana had the right to keep Didipio open.
“Authority over the Didipio mine rests with the national government,” the company said in the statement. “The Local Government Code of 1991 (Republic Act No. 7160) does not grant the power or authority to the Provincial governor or any local government officer to restrain any aspect of the operation.”
Didipio, which began production in 2013, has a measured and indicated resource of 1.3 million ounces of gold and 160,000 tonnes of copper
The mine, 270 km north of Manila, is expected to churn out this year between 120,000 and 130,000 ounces of gold and 14,000 to 15,000 tonnes of copper.
The Melbourne-based company also has assets in New Zealand and the United States.
Before the ongoing disruptions, it expected to produce 500,000 to 550,000 ounces of gold and between 14,000 to 15,000 tonnes of copper this year.

Diamond market weakness prompts giant De Beers to curb supply
De Beers, the world’s biggest diamond miner by value, is scaling back production plans for this year as it tries adjusting to a brewing industry crisis that’s hitting prices and demand for precious stones.
The Anglo American’s unit said a range of factors, including ongoing trade tensions between the United States and China, contributed to a 27% drop in earnings during the first half of the year.
Polished diamond demand, and midstream rough diamond demand, was impacted on by retail store closures and destocking in the US, the world’s biggest market for diamonds, De Beers said.
Elsewhere, sales were impacted on by the trade tensions, protests in Hong Kong and a stronger US dollar, which particularly affected China and the Gulf.
De Beers said it expected the impacts of ongoing challenges to be short term and predicted a healthier industry outlook over the long term.
The company, once the monopoly supplier of precious stones, has been combating increasing competition from laboratory-made diamonds by producing its own at a lower cost than peers.
Cheaper diamonds, which are often small and low quality, are selling for less now than six years ago. And when it comes to synthetic stones, De Beers’ entry in the market is creating a big price gap between mined and lab diamonds, pressuring rivals that specialize in synthesized stones at the same time.
A 1-carat man-made diamond sells for about $4,000 and a similar natural diamond fetches roughly $8,000. De Beers new lab diamonds will sell for about $800 a carat. That’s a fifth of the price of existing man-made stones and one-tenth of the cost of buying a similar natural gem.
The move has put pressure on polished prices, hurting the margins for De Beers’s customers who cut, polish and trade the company’s diamonds.
The company, with operations from Botswana to Canada, is far from turning its back to mined diamonds. It recently announced a $468 million investment in a new vessel to extract precious rocks off the coast of Namibia.
While marine diamonds may be challenging to find, they’re certainly worth the effort. According to the company’s own estimates, 95% of the precious rocks recovered from the sea are of “gem quality,” compared to just 40-60% of those mined inland.

Pima Zinc acquires namesake property in Arizona
Toronto-based exploration company Pima Zinc, formerly known as Rae-Wallace Mining Company, announced that it has just closed the acquisition of 1139432 B.C. Ltd., the registered and beneficial holder of a 100% interest in the Pima Zinc property located in southern Arizona, USA.
In a press release, Pima said that in connection with this acquisition, it issued 5,000,000 common shares to the existing shareholders of 1139432 B.C. Ltd., on a pro-rata basis.
The Pima Zinc property consists of 133 Bureau-of-Land-Management unpatented lode mining claims with a total area of 2,506 acres and, subject to approval, seven Arizona State Land Department Mineral Exploration permit applications for an additional 2,080 acres.
The property lies within fifteen kilometres of three current and past-producing mines, namely Asarco – Grupo Mexico’s Mission mine, whose proven and probable reserves are estimated in 1.49 million tonnes of ore grading 0.38% copper, and Freeport-McMoran’s Twin Buttes and Sierrita mines, the latter with estimated proven and probable reserves of 3.3 billion tonnes of ore grading 0.23% copper along with an additional resource of 1.3 billion tonnes of mineralized material at 0.17% copper and 0.02% molybdenum.

Lara Exploration’s stock jumps on Brazil copper project’s drill results
Vancouver-based Lara Exploration’s (TSXV: LRA) stock soared over 16% Tuesday after reporting drill results from its Planalto copper project in the Carajás Mineral Province of northern Brazil.
The Planalto Project comprises three exploration licenses, totalling 4,726 hectares. Copper-gold mineralization is now recognised to underlie an area with dimensions of more than 350m north-south and 350m east-west and is open down dip to the west of the drill grid, the company said in a press release.
A number of the holes also tested north and south lateral extensions of the significant copper mineralization previously reported from the scout drill programs in 2017 and 2018.
A further three scout holes were drilled to test an anomalous copper in soil anomaly just to the south of the main Homestead target, known as the Silica Cap target and also returned promising zones of copper mineralization, Lara said.
The western-most holes of this program on each of the drill sections all show wide zones of mineralization open to the West in the order of 50m to approximately 80m thick and with the copper grades between 0.46% and 0.61% Cu, 49.95 m @ 0.46% Cu; 78 m @ 0.61% Cu; 82 m @ 0.47% Cu and 55.3 m @ 0.51% Cu).
By market close Tuesday, Lara Exploration’s shares had been traded 247,117 times, over 16 times the average daily volume of 15,317. The company’s market capitalization sits at C$19.7 million.

Fission to prepare PEA for underground-only option at Patterson Lake South
Fission Uranium of Kelowna, B.C., is looking at an underground-only option for mining its Patterson Lake South property on the southwest edge of the Athabasca Basin. Potential benefits of such a plan include low operating costs, lower capex and reduced construction time – all of which add up to improved economics.
Roscoe Postle Associations has begun an underground pre-feasibility study on the Triple R deposit. The report is due by the end of September 2019. An earlier PFS that combined open pit and underground production had an operating cost of US$6.77 per lb. and pre-tax internal rate of return of 29%.
The near surface, high grade Triple R deposit contains an indicated resource of 87.8 million lb. of uranium oxide in 2.2 million tonnes averaging 1.82%. Within this there is a high grade zone of 48.2 million lb. in 119,000 tonnes averaging 18.39%. The inferred resource is 1.3 million tonnes grading 1.80% uranium oxide with a high grade zone containing 14.7 million lb. in 32,000 tonnes grading 20.85%.

Barkerville Gold stock rises on new drill results
Barkerville Gold Mines (TSXV: BGM) released new drill results on Tuesday from the 2019 Island Mountain exploration program at the company’s flagship Cariboo project in the historical Cariboo Mining District of central British Columbia.
Shares of the Vancouver-based gold miner rose by nearly 10% at market open.
Of the 24 holes recently completed on Island Mountain, one yielded 45.94 g/t Au over 5.2 meters including a sample of 399 g/t Au over 0.50 meter. Another hole returned 14.91 g/t Au over 4.40 meters including a sample of 55.90 g/t Au over 0.80 meter.
A total of 20,000 meters in 47 holes have been completed on Island Mountain so far this year.
Barkerville’s Cariboo project covers an area of approximately 1,950 square kilometres along a strike length of 67 kilometres which includes several past-producing placer and hard rock mines.
In May, the company updated the underground resources at Cariboo, which now contains 2.4 million ounces of gold in 13.2 million tonnes grading 5.60 g/t in the measured and indicated category — a 50% increase over the 2018 resource estimate.
The company has a C$230.6 million market capitalization.

BHP earmarks $400 million to reduce emissions from its mines, products
BHP (ASX, NYSE:BHP) has committed to invest $400 million over five years to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from its operations and mined commodities, as the world’s number one mining company looks to take an industry lead on tackling climate change.
The move, the first of its kind by a top miner, follows a series of recent steps BHP has been taking to become an environmentally friendly company, including carbon capture and storage and other innovations such as direct air capture.
The Melbourne, Australia-based giant has also been moving away from thermal coal, which currently makes up for about 5% of its revenue, at a very fast pace.
Last year, BHP left the World Coal Association (WCA) over differences on climate change, noting it only wanted to belong to groups aligned with the company’s climate and energy stance.
Early this month, the diversified miner announced it was hoping to divest its thermal coal business, which includes NSW Energy Coal in Australia and Cerrejón in Colombia.
Speaking in London on Tuesday, chief executive Andrew Mackenzie announced he planned to tie executive pay more closely to environmental targets.
“For many years performance against emissions targets has been considered in BHP’s executive remuneration plans. From next financial year [2021] we will clarify and strengthen this link and further reinforce the strategic importance of action to reduce emissions,” he said.
Mackenzie also endorsed carbon pricing, but said it was not enough to combat the looming threat of mass extinctions and major sea rises due to global warming, which he called an “indisputable” fact.
“The planet will survive. Many species may not,” he said. “This is a confronting conclusion but as a veteran geologist once said, ‘you can’t argue with a rock’.”
Despite its good intentions, BHP directly produced 16.5 million tonnes of carbon dioxide-equivalent emissions in the 2017/18 fiscal year, mostly from energy and diesel use at its operations.
That’s the equivalent to the greenhouse gas emissions from 3.5 million cars or 4.2 coal-fired power stations for a year, according to a calculator on the US Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) website.
Emissions are divided into categories. Scope 1 and 2 cover direct emissions by an organization and indirect emissions generated by power it buys to run its operations.
Scope 3 emissions are caused when a company’s products are used, for instance in steel-making or when they are shipped to customers.
Unlike some of its biggest competitors, including Rio Tinto, BHP plans to work on reducing its Scope 3 emissions, which are 40 times greater than those generated by its mines and oilfields.
Mackenzie said the company would also set public goals to address Scope 3 emissions, while continuing to mine for much-needed metals.
“It may be uncomfortable for some, but many solutions to global warming — such as the increased electrification of transport — will require more mined resources rather than less. Electric motors contain 80 per cent more copper than an internal combustion engine,” he wrote in an opinion piece for Financial Times.
“That is why we must change the current storyline around easy, single solutions and acknowledge that there are many competing perspectives that must be taken into account.”
BHP’s announced investment in emissions reduction across its value chain reflects Mackenzie’s belief that commerce, science and politics must work together to develop “a multi-modal” solution to climate risk.
“Renewables, nuclear, hydrogen, long-term storage of electricity, coal and gas with carbon capture and storage [CCS], negative emissions technologies like reforestation and biomass with CCS, and other approaches will all contribute to lower carbon outcomes,” he noted.
The executive cited the case of electric vehicles as an example of unintended consequences of so-called green technologies.
If those cars simply draw on the power generated from fossil fuels then “the emissions are just moved up the chain,” Mackenzie said.
“There are similar trade-offs associated with renewables,” he continued. “While renewables are powerful levers for decarbonisation they compete for land which could be used for agriculture and urbanization, or for conservation and leisure.”
BHP’s main boss concluded his presentation by noting that while price of tackling global warming is high, the cost of failing to do so will be even higher.

Anaconda and Mi’kmaw chiefs sign MOU on Goldboro project
Anaconda Mining (TSX: ANX) announced on Monday the recent signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Assembly of Nova Scotia Mi’kmaw Chiefs that will govern the process the parties will negotiate regarding the Goldboro gold project in Nova Scotia.
Goldboro is an advanced exploration and development project located approximately 185 km northeast of Halifax, within Nova Scotia’s Eastern Goldfields District. Anaconda acquired the project as part of a merger with 100%-owned subsidiary Orex Exploration in 2017.
In a media statement, Anaconda’s CEO Dustin Angelo said the company acknowledges that the Mi’kmaq of Nova Scotia are committed to protect and enhance the land and resource-based economy within its traditional territory, and said that signing the MOU is an important milestone.
The MOU outlines the process for Anaconda and the Assembly to work together in good faith in a way that reflects a desire to build a mutually beneficial relationship that will be sustained for the life of the project, Anaconda said.

Brumadinho dam disaster keeps hurting Vale: iron ore output falls 34%
Brazil’s Vale (NYSE:VALE), the world’s No.1 iron ore miner, saw output of the steelmaking commodity collapse by almost 34% in the second quarter of the year, compared to the same period in 2018.
The drop to 64.057 million tonnes came as several major operations, including Brucutu, which is the Rio de Janeiro-based firms’ biggest mine in the southeastern state of Minas Gerais, remained all or partially shut down following a deadly dam burst at the company’s Corrego do Feijão mine.
Vale also said that iron ore sales from March to June had dropped by 15.5% to 61.945 million tonnes.
Since January’s dam collapse, which left at least 300 people dead, both authorities and companies have stepped up scrutiny of so-called upstream dams, the cheapest but generally regarded as the riskiest method to store mine waste.
In March, Vale was forced to shut its Timbopeba mine, which produced 12.8 million tonnes of iron ore per year, due to safety concerns. It also suspended operations at its Mariana complex, where a similar accident occurred in 2015, killing 19 people and flooding the local area.
The company later received an order to halt another two dams — Minervino and Cordao Nova Vista.
