Teck releases climate action report
Teck Resources has released its second “Climate Action and Portfolio Resilience” report. It outlines how the company will go forward producing products that are essential in a low carbon future while tackling climate change.
The report analyzes potential business risks and opportunities under different climate change scenarios. It also outlines how the company is reducing emissions and improving energy efficiency in its operations.
Teck is taking action on climate change by reducing its own carbon footprint. Reducing greenhouse gases (GHG), using renewable power, and boosting energy efficiency are high on the list. Here are some of the steps the company is taking:
- GHG reducing projects have removed over 289,000 tonnes of these emissions since 2011;
- The goal for 2030 is to boost that total to 450,000 tonnes of emissions.
- In 2018, Teck generated 81% of the electricity it used from renewable energy sources;
- Since 2011, the company has increased capacity of its alternate energy sources to 30.7 MW;
- Teck’s metallurgical coal and copper operations are among the least carbon intensive in the world.
And the company is updating its sustainability strategy. The results, including new GHG goals, will be published in 2020.
For our readers who wonder how an oilsands partner can possibly lower its carbon footprint, the last word goes to Teck: “The Fort Hills oilsands mine … produces a product that has a lower carbon intensity than approximately half of the oil currently refined in the US.”

Seabridge Gold completes Nevada project acquisition
Seabridge Gold (TSX: SEA) (NYSE: SA) announced Thursday that it has closed its purchase of the Goldstorm project in northern Nevada from Mountain View Gold Corp. In exchange, Seabridge has issued 25,000 shares to Mountain View.
The Goldstrom property consists of 134 mining claims and 1,160 leased acres totaling approximately 3,900 acres, and it is located about 3 km east of Seabridge’s Snowstorm property, where the company has commenced its first drill program. Snowstorm is situated at the projected intersection of three of the most important gold trends in northern Nevada: the Carlin Trend, the Getchell Trend and the Northern Nevada Rift Zone.
The drill program at Snowstorm is targeting a Turquoise Ridge/Twin Creeks type of high-grade gold system along a continuation of the Getchell Trend. About 7 to 10 coincident structural and stratigraphic targets would be tested in the initial program, the company says, which is expected to provide enough information to refine targeting for subsequent exploration.
On the Goldstorm property, limited exploration has been done to date, though previous operators have identified a series of northwest-trending veins that showed strong pathfinder geochemistry and highly anomalous gold results. In Mountain View’s limited past drilling, the best assay results yielded 5.50 g/t gold over 2.0 m, including 9.29 g/t over 1.0 m.

African graphite exports to China rise by 170% in H1 2019
Graphite suppliers in Africa are continuously ramping up production to meet China’s surging demand for the battery material. During H1 2019, natural graphite exports from Africa to China rose by more than 170%, according to data compiled by Roskill.
Leading the way is Mozambique, which produce mostly the small and medium size flakes required for battery applications. The southern African nation exported 100 kt through the first six months of 2019, 82% of which went to China. To put that into perspective, the country exported 51.8 kt all of 2018, and merely 0.8 kt the year before.
Much of the exponential increase in Mozambique’s graphite shipments can be attributed to Syrah Resources and its Balama project, which came on line late 2017. The project produced 104 kt last year and 92 kt already in H1 2019.
Roskill estimates that demand for natural graphite from the battery sector is set to grow by 19% annually from 2018-2028. This would bring total graphite demand to nearly 1.7 Mt, so even if the Balama project reaches its full capacity of 350 kt, additional sources of graphite will be needed in the long term.
For the larger flakes, their end-use markets (fire retardants, gaskets etc.) are much smaller than batteries, but demand from China is still growing. Madagascar is one of the major producers of large flake graphite, and shipments from the island have increased rapidly in recent years, from 9.4 kt in 2017 to 46.9 kt in 2018, and now 32.5 kt in H1 2019. Notable graphite producers in Madagascar currently include Tirupati Graphite Group, Établissements Gallois and Bass Metals of Australia.
A country that is on its way to becoming a major producer is Tanzania, where the government has recently reissued mining licenses, allowing a number of projects to move forward this year.
One of those is Black Rock Mining’s Mahenge project, on which a new definitive feasibility study (DFS) was completed in July, increasing its graphite concentrate production estimate to 340 kt per year from 250 kt. Walkabout Resources also released an updated DFS this year and is preparing the Lindi Jumbo mine site for construction.
Many other Tanzania projects are gathering investment interest. which could push Africa-China graphite trading even further.

Superior Lake completes BFS for Ontario zinc project
Superior Lake Resources (ASX: SUP) of Australia has completed a bankable feasibility study for its project of the same name 200 km east of Thunder Bay, Ontario. The project encompasses two deposits – the large Pick Lake and smaller Winston Lake.
Both deposits have historic production. The Winston Lake mine and 1,000-t/d mill was operated by Inmet Mining from the late 1980s to the late 1990s. Ore from Pick Lake was also fed to the mill beginning in 1995. Historical zinc concentrate graded 52% to 53.5% zinc, and copper concentrate contained 22% to 25% copper.
The new feasibility study outlines an economic project. The net present value (8% discount) is C$157 million and the internal rate of return is 31% (both numbers before tax). The all-in sustaining cost per pound of zinc will be C$0.74 over the life of the project.
The initial capex is C$86 million, excluding owners and pre-production expenses for a project with a mine life of nine years. At full production, the Superior Lake project will have an annual output of 38,000 tonnes zinc and 1.4 tonne of contained zinc. The mill will have a throughput of 325,000 tonnes per year treating ore with an average grade of 13.7% zinc at an average recovery of 96%.
Superior Lake says most of the ore for a reopened mill will come from the Pick Lake deposit. Together, the two deposits have an indicated resource of 2.1 million tonnes grading 18.0% zinc, 0.9% copper 0.4 g/t gold and 34 g/t silver. Within the indicated resource, there are 2 million tonnes of probable reserves at 13.9% zinc, 0.6% copper, 0.2 g/t gold, and 26.2 g/t silver. The inferred resource is 280,000 tonnes averaging 16.2% zinc, 1.0% copper, 0.3 g/t gold, and 37 g/t silver.

Mine tailings reprocessing competition offers $16,000 in prizes
Ennomotive, a Europe- based open innovation platform for engineering challenges, has just launched a competition to find new ways to eliminate impurities from mine tailings and use them to produce different types of glass.
During mining operations, metallic ores and other inert materials are extracted from the ground and are usually stored in tailings dams. These waste materials have different granulometry and are mainly composed of silica and smaller amounts of other materials.
Silica can be used to produce different kinds of glass, such as flat glass products, bottles, or others that require different compositions and prices. However, the current materials found in tailings require a reprocessing to eliminate impurities at a reasonable cost.
The main goal of this challenge is to find out the process and/or technology to turn this waste into valuable raw materials to be used in the manufacturing of different types of glass.
The online competition is open worldwide to any professional, student or academic from different industries and technical backgrounds that could propose a solution for this challenge.
Ennomotive is offers € 15,000 (about $16,000) in prizes to be shared among the best ideas for this competition. Interested participants should sign up at ennomotive.com and submit their solution before October 7th.

A colossus for Canada: 5,500-ton iron ore handling system shipped to Baffin Island
Baffinland Iron Ore Mines’ Mary River mine is one of the world’s richest iron ore deposits with iron contents more than 65%. But the port on Baffin Island in northern Canada is one of the most remote and challenging locations in the world. It is only free of ice and accessible to shipping between the end of July and the beginning of October.
Thyssenkrupp is developing and building a new materials handling system, and the first delivery, including a crusher, a screening system and a railcar unloading station was shipped from Bremerhaven, Germany in July.
The project generates potential for the economic development of the region and will create jobs for the local population.
The BigLift Barentsz reached port on Baffin Island with its roughly 5,500 ton freight in the beginning of August.
Baffinland Iron Mines aims to more than triple its iron ore handling capacities to 12 million tons per year, thyssenkrupp said in a media statement.

Positive ISR test at Denison’s Wheeler River
Denison Mines (TSE: DML) says the test results of in situ recovery of uranium from the Wheeler River project are positive. Denison is the 90% owner and operator of the project located in the eastern part of Saskatchewan’s Athabasca Basin, and JCU (Canada) Exploration Co. holds the remaining 10%.
The tests used water to evaluate the hydraulic conditions and to assess how the mining solution will flow between pairs of test wells. The work was done to increase confidence in the ISR method, as recommended in the 2018 pre-feasibility study.
Denison said the initial test results confirm hydraulic connectivity between multiple test wells in test area No. 1 of the Phoenix deposit. Additional results from area No. 1 are expected as are results from test area No. 2. Two large diameter commercial scale wells are planned for these test areas later this summer.
A hydrogeological model will be made based on the quantitative analysis and integration of data from the planned tests. The model will be used to simulate groundwater flow and to evaluate system sensitivity to key parameters as part of the feasibility study.
The Wheeler River project has probable resources of 109.4 million lb. of uranium dioxide.

Probe Metals finds new high-grade zone at Monique property
At the Monique gold project, 25 km east of Val-d’Or, Quebec, operator Probe Metals has discovered a new gold zone that returned 7.6 g/t gold over 10.0 metres. The Monique project is owned by Montreal’s Monarch Gold, and Probe Metals is earning a 60% interest.
Fifteen holes drilled south and southwest of the A and B zones returned evidence of a new 500-metre zone. The best assays from this area were from hole MO-19-16 that cut 5.9 g/t gold over 11.5 metres within a larger interval of 1.9 g/t over 49.4 metres. Hole MO-19-18 returned 7.5 g/t gold over 10.0 metres.
Together these two holes point to a new 500-metre gold structure, named zone M. The new zone trends roughly parallel to the A and B zones and dips steeply to the north. Three other holes were drilled along trend.
The company is preparing a follow-up drill program for 2020.
At market close Tuesday, Probe Metals’ shares were trading up 5% on the TSX. The company has a C$137 million market capitalization.

Teck’s zinc production to take hit following equipment failure
Teck Resources (TSX: TECK) says an equipment failure that occurred this weekend at its zinc refinery in Trial, British Columbia, could cost the miner between 20,000 and 30,000 tonnes in lost production.
The failure affected one of four rectifiers used in refinery, which would reduce its total production capacity by about 25%, the company says.
Repairs are expected to take up to 20 weeks with an estimated cost of $5 million to $10 million.
No injuries or environmental impacts related to the incident were reported.
Last year, Teck’s Trail operations produced 302,000 tonnes of refined zinc. Its production guidance for this year is 305,000-310,000 tonnes.

Australia’s gold output reaches record high in 2018
Australian gold output reached an all-time record high of 10.3 million oz. in the most recent fiscal year. Figures from U.S. Global Investors indicate that the country produced 321 tonnes of gold in 2018.
Meanwhile, Canadian output is lagging behind. Canada’s gold production in 2018 was 193 tonnes or 6.2 million oz., making it the fifth-largest gold producer in the world.
In 2018, China led all gold producers with its 400 tonnes or 12.9 million oz. That is followed by Australia, Russia (282 tonnes/9.1 million oz.), United States (253 tonnes/8.1 million oz.), Canada, Indonesia (190 tonnes/6.1 million oz.), Peru (155 tonnes/5.0 million oz.), South Africa (124 tonnes/4.0 million oz.), Mexico (122 tonnes/3.9 million oz.), and Ghana (102 tonnes/3.3 million oz.).
Readers shouldn’t be too discouraged by Canada’s performance. Mining-Technology.com predicts that the country will produce 7.6 million oz. by 2023. Higher gold prices, new gold mines on the horizon and millions of ounces in reserves should keep Canada in the game.

Golden Predator provides restart notice for Brewery Creek mine
Golden Predator Mining (TSXV: GPY) announced on Monday its formal intention to resume development and production the Brewery Creek mine in Yukon. The formal notice has accepted by the Yukon government, and the company is now authorized to restart mining activities that follow the previously approved mine plans without further assessment.
The Brewery Creek mine was first operated by Viceroy Resource Corp from 1996 to 2002, during which it produced about 280,000 oz of gold from seven oxide deposits along the property trend. The mine was put into temporary closure in 2002 when the price of gold plunged below $300/oz.
Golden Predator later took over work on the project in 2009 and conducted exploration drilling from 2010 to 2013. A preliminary economic assessment completed during that time shows an indicated oxide resource of 577 000 troy ounces of gold in 14.2 million tonnes averaging 1.27 g/t gold, and an inferred oxide resource of 279 000 troy ounces of gold in 9.3 million tonnes averaging 0.93 g/t gold.
Now that gold is trading above $1,500/oz, the company has good reason to reopen the Brewery Creek mine. Heavy equipment has been mobilized to the mine site, and haul road improvements and clearing of the licensed cells on the heap leach pad have already started. Drilling will be expanded to include a second reverse circulation drill rig and a diamond core rig.
The 180 sqkm property is located 55 km due east of Dawson City, and is accessible year-round by paved gravel roads. There is significant infrastructure in place for a timely restart of the mine, says the company.

Glencore commits $45 million to restart First Cobalt refinery in Canada
Mining and commodities trader giant Glencore (LON:GLEN) is lending Canada’s First Cobalt Corp. (TSX-V:FCC) an initial $5 million to restart the company’s refinery in Ontario, which would become the only North American producer of refined cobalt for the electric vehicle (EV) market.
Glencore said that once a definitive feasibility study for the expansion is completed, expected to happen in early 2020, it would invest another $40 million into recommissioning and expanding the refinery, located 600 km from the US border.
The facility has the potential to produce either a cobalt sulfate for the lithium-ion battery market or cobalt metal for the North American industrial and military applications.
Based on a study carried out by Ausenco Engineering Canada, if the First Cobalt refinery operated at 55 tpd, it could produce 5,000 tonnes a year of contained cobalt in sulfate, assuming cobalt hydroxide feed grading 30% cobalt.
The companies are targeting first production late next year, with the planned expansion completed in 2021.
Prices for the battery metal have soared more than 30% since Glencore announced this month it would close its Mutanda mine in the Democratic Republic of Congo, the world’s largest cobalt mine, offering hope for a sector whose shares have been hit by fears over a global recession.
Oversupply and stockpiling by companies in the battery supply chain, however, had caused the metal fell to $12 a pound. In April last year, cobalt was selling for $44 a pound, its highest level in a decade.

It also includes features such as G-Dash, which allows operators to present a graphical dashboard of the machine telemetry and diagnostic features to ensure optimal loader performance.
The ControlMaster solution will be deployed across Westgold’s Big Bell, Paddy’s Flat, Comet, South Emu and Starlight operations.
“Being able to implement multiple machine selection/multiple machine control is an added advantage as it will support staged growth and specialized applications where geotechnical constraints require a period of standoff before re-entry after blasting,” says David Noort, Executive General Manager – ACM at Westgold Resources.

IAMGOLD resumes mining at gold mine in Suriname
Canada’s IAMGOLD Corp. (TSX IMG), (NYSE: IAG) has resumed operations in the northern pits of its Rosebel gold mine, in Suriname, after suspending activities earlier this month following an incident involving police that caused the death of an artisanal miner died and left some equipment unusable.
Active operations in the southern pits, along with mine development activities at Saramacca joint venture (JV) project, remain suspended, the gold producer said.
Last week, the Toronto-based miner laid off 325 contractors from Rosebel and lowered its production forecast for the year to reflect the mine’s halt.
The new attributable guidance is between 765,000 oz and 810,000 ounces, compared with the previous forecast of 810,000 to 870,000 ounces.
Rosebel has often been a target for illegal miners, which has led the company to allow some artisanal miners to work on the concession.
The Canadian company owns 95% of the gold mine and the government of Suriname holds the remaining 5%. IAMGOLD, which has four operating mines, froze in January construction of its Côté gold project in Ontario. It added it would wait for improved market conditions before going ahead with the $1.15-bn investment.

Radisson closes $4.5 million private placement to develop O’Brien gold project
Québec – based Radisson Mining Resources’ (TSX-V: RDS) stock was up over 3% Friday, after closing on a C$6 million (USD$4.5 million) private placement.
The financing consisted of the issuance of 20.6 million units at C $0.15 per unit, for C$3.09 million, 3 million flow-through shares at C$0.16 per share, for C$499,983, and 11.5 million flow-through Class A shares at C$0.21 for C$2.4 million.
Rob McEwen, owner of McEwen Mining and founder and former CEO of Goldcorp invested C$500,000, Radisson said.
The proceeds will be used to fund the exploration and development of the 100% owned O’Brien gold project and for general corporate and working capital purposes.
The O’Brien project is an advanced exploration project located in the Abitibi region in northwestern Québec.
The O’Brien mine was considered the highest grade gold producer in Quebec between 1926 and 1957, when the underground operation churned out 1.20 million tonnes grading 15.25 grams gold per tonne for 587,121 oz. gold.
At market close Friday, Radisson’s shares were trading at C$0.16. The company has a C$22.6 million market capitalization.

Stornoway Diamond dealt another blow
Stornoway Diamond Corporation (TSX-SWY) has officially been put on notice this week, facing a delisting review from the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The beleaguered Canadian miner, originally co-founded by Eira Thomas, has been facing financial storms since late 2016, but its share price was holding at C20 cents in March, since declining nearly 90%.
In April, Stornoway halted operations at Renard, which is the province of Quebec’s first diamond mine, and Stornoway’s primary asset.
Stornoway has been exposed to the low quality end of the market, and those diamonds have been selling for much less, due to an unforeseen oversupply.
Things were looking up in June, when Stornoway and its subsidiaries arranged bridge financing to keep the Renard mine operating while the company undertook a strategic review with the aim of restructuring its finances.
But Stornoway since released grim financial results from the three months leading to June 30. The miner reported a net loss of over C$394 million, and said that management forecasts cash flows “will not be sufficient to meet the corporation’s obligations, commitments and budgeted expenditures through June 30, 2020 based upon current market diamond prices.”
Stornoway is now being reviewed under the TSX’s remedial review process and has been granted 120 days to comply with all requirements for continued listing.
If Stornoway cannot demonstrate that it meets all TSX requirements on or before December 20, 2019, the Corporation’s securities will be delisted 30 days from that date.
Friday afternoon, Stornoway’s stock was sitting at just over a penny.

Gold price surges to new 6-year high
Gold hit a six-year high on Friday as investors piled into the safe haven metal amid an escalating US-China trade war, and the prospects of a return to ultra-loose monetary policy by the Fed.
Gold for delivery in December, the most active futures contract trading in New York, touched a high of $1,539.50 an ounce, up $31 or 2.1% from yesterday’s settlement price on the Comex market. Gold is up 20% in 2019 and trading at its highest levels in more than six years.
China on Friday announced plans to impose $75 billion in additional tariffs in retaliation for new levies President Donald Trump has scheduled for after the Christmas shopping season in the US.
Trump responded by saying the US does “not need” China and that he has “ordered” US companies to “immediately start looking for an alternative” to Chinese supply chains.
The US economy is facing “significant risks” and trade-policy uncertainty seems to be playing a role in the global slowdown and in weak manufacturing and capital spending in the US, Federal Reserve Chairman Powell said in the text of remarks Friday in Jackson Hole, Wyoming according to Bloomberg News.
“We will act as appropriate to sustain the expansion,” he said.
US equities fell sharply on the news and yields on government bonds plummeted.
The relationship between long-term interest rates in the US (as proxied by 10-year Treasurys) and the gold price is strongly negative. The yield on the 10-year note dipped to around 1.58%, the lowest in nearly three years.
Rising real interest rates increases the opportunity costs of holding gold because the metal provides no yield and investors have to rely on price appreciation for returns. Lower rates also makes the dollar, which usually moves in the opposite direction of the gold price, less attractive.

Kootenay Silver, Pure Nickel on Eric Sprott investment blitz list
Canadian explorers Kootenay Silver (TSXV: KTN) and Pure Nickel (TSXV: NIC) have received fresh injections of cash from Eric Sprott.
The Canadian billionaire investor – also a pioneer in the gold-backed ETF industry – has splashed over C$145 million on gold, silver, and nickel explorers since May, mostly on Canada-domiciled companies.
Pure Nickel’s shares jumped 20% Thursday on the news that Sprott invested a further C$3 million for an up to 19.9% stake in the company. He had previously invested over C$200,000.
The financing is structured as a convertible debenture and is subject to the approval of the TSXV. Also on Thursday, Pure Nickel announced a merger with Explor Resources (CVE: EXS ).
If Sprott converts the entire debenture, he will have a 30% interest in the new company and Pure Nickel shareholders and Explor shareholders will have a 30% and a 40% interest respectively.
The new company will use proceeds for the advancement of the Timmins Porcupine West Gold property in Ontario.
In the west, British Columbia’s Kootenay Silver (TSXV: KTN) closed on a C$5 million private placement from Sprott.
Kootenay said Sprott has a long-term view of the investment and may acquire additional securities of the company in the future.
At market close on Thursday, Kootenay Silver’s shares were up over 4%. The company has a C$56 million market capitalization.

Hudson Resources makes first bulk shipment from Greenland mine
Vancouver-based Hudson Resources (TSXV: HUD) announced Thursday it has made its first bulk shipment from the White Mountain anorthosite mine in Greenland.
Approximately 14,400 tonnes of GreenSpar 250 anorthosite product and 56 tonnes of GreenSpar 90 (98% finer than 90 microns) have been loaded onto the MV Happy Dragon bulk ship and departed for the company’s port facility in Charleston, South Carolina. Sailing time to Charleston is approximately 10 days.
Hudson Resources extracts anorthosite minerals, which yield the hardest feldspar with the highest refractive index, to make its GreenSpar products, primarily used for interior paints and coatings. Other revenue streams for mining anorthosite include feed material for fiberglass, alumina and heat-resistant cement.
The news comes just a week after US President Donald Trump expressed his desire to buy Greenland. The Danish territory has been drawing foreign interest partly due to its abundance of natural resources such as coal, zinc, copper, iron ore and rare minerals.
In July, the company hosted a US state department visit at the White Mountain site, where the delegation was accompanied by CEO Jim Cambon for a tour of the anorthosite operations and also given an update on the its Sarfartoq rare earth project, also in Greenland.
An official opening of the White Mountain mine will be held later this month on August 28. The calcium feldspar mine is permitted for 50 years.

Botswana Diamonds renews two licences in central Kalahari
Botswana Diamonds (LON:BOD) has renewed two “strategic” licences to the end of 2021 and is considering a joint venture to develop those projects, in the country’s Kalahari Desert.
The licences, which cover just over 500 km2, are located west of the Ghaghoo diamond mine, which Gem Diamonds (LON:GEMD) sold in June to local company Pro Civil for $5.4 million.
The company has already identified prospective drill-ready targets through intensive work including aeromagnetic surveys, ground magnetic exploration, soil sampling and target selection.
Botswana Diamonds became the sole owner of the PL232 and PL235 licences in November last year, after buying Russian diamond miner Alrosa’s 50% stake in their Sunland Minerals joint venture (JV).
Botswana, which was overtaken by Russia as the world’s top diamond producing country in 2014, is grappling with aging mines, as well as power and water shortages.
Still, the nation is home to some of the world’s most prolific diamond mines, including Lucara Diamond’s (TSX:LUC) Karowe operation, where the now-famous Lesedi la Rona, the second-largest gem-quality diamond to ever be found, was unearthed in 2016.
Besides diamonds, the country also produces nickel, copper, coal and iron ore.

World’s No. 2 lithium miner SQM hit by weak prices
Chile’s Chemical and Mining Society (SQM), the world’s second largest lithium producer, has been hit by sustained weak prices for the metal used in batteries that power electric vehicles (EVs) and high tech electronics, with profits falling by 47.5% to $70.2 million in the second quarter, from $133.9 million a year earlier.
Delivering results for the three months to June 30, the Santiago-based company echoed analysts and other market players’ concern about the effect that oversupply of the battery metal as well as cuts to EVs subsidies is having on prices.
“The second quarter results were mainly impacted by lower lithium sale prices,” Chief Executive Ricardo Ramos said in a statement. “We have seen lithium supply growing more than demand over the past few quarters, putting pressure on prices.”
The miner attributed the sharp decline in its selling prices to higher sales to China, the world’s top consumer of the commodity, where prices have sunk.
Prices for lithium carbonate, the most common type used in EV batteries, doubled over 2016 and 2017. Since then, they have fallen by more than 40% over the past year, to around $9.25 per kg at the end of July, commodity research group CRU said on Wednesday.
The consultancy says that lithium prices will continue to be governed by cost fundamentals, which will keep them in the single-figures.
CRU’s view seems to be backed by the main producers. Earlier this month, Albemarle Corp (NYSE: ALB), the world’s No. 1 lithium miner, postponed plans to add about 125,000 tonnes of processing capacity due to oversupply.
The company has also revised a deal to buy into Australia’s Mineral Resources’ (ASX: MIN) Wodgina lithium mine and said it would delay building 75,000 tonnes of processing capacity at Kemerton, also in Australia.
Despite market weakness, SQM said it expected sales volumes to increase in the near-term, noting that shipments to China had already jumped. “We sold higher sales volumes in the second quarter and expect to sell higher volumes in the second half of the year as we prepare for a 30% to 40% increase in sales volumes next year,” Ramos said.
SQM still expects sales volumes for the year to reach between 45,000 and 50,000 tonnes and said the figure will grow further thanks to a key project in the Middle East, which will require 400,000 tonnes of lithium between 2020 and 2022.
The company did not provide details on such project.

Antofagasta wary of US-China trade war despite strong results
Chilean miner Antofagasta Plc. (LON: ANTO) said Thursday it was striving to offset the impact of lower copper prices, which have fallen 4% this year due to uncertainties brought by the US-China trade war.
Despite the challenges, the FTSE 100 company, majority-owned by the Chile’s wealthy Luksic family, reported a 44% increase in first-half earnings to $1.3 billion, from $904.2 million last year.
The miner, which has focused on controlling costs since the onset of tensions between Washington and Beijing, expects copper output to decline in 2020 close to 2018 levels. The company attributed the forecast production drop on lower grades at its Centinela mine, , which began churning out copper in 2001 and has 49 years of mine life remaining, but said such fall should be partially reversed in 2021.
“Antofagasta remains the best positioned of the European copper pure plays,” BMO Capital Markets’ analyst, Edward Sterck, wrote in a note to investors.
“Its strong balance sheet, quality of assets and operational performance, along with consistently high shareholder returns over time, justifies its higher price compared with its peers,” he said.
Copper miners in mature markets, particularly in Chile, the world’s top producer of the red metal, have seen production costs rise as they need to dig deeper and process larger amounts of rock to obtain the same amount of copper they used to a decade ago.
