How perovskites can help develop high-efficiency, low-cost solar cells
Researchers at Canada’s McGill University have made a step forward in unlocking the mystery of how perovskites act as semiconductors even when there are defects in the material’s crystal structure.
Perovskite is a calcium titanium oxide mineral composed of calcium titanate.
The McGill finding is considered crucial for the development of high-efficiency, low-cost solar cells and other optical and electronic devices because perovskite breaks with the limitations posed by other semiconductors, which require stringent and costly manufacturing techniques to produce crystals that are as defect-free as possible.
“Historically, people have been using bulk semiconductors that are perfect crystals. And now, all of a sudden, this imperfect, soft crystal starts to work for semiconductor applications, from photovoltaics to LEDs,” Patanjali Kambhampati, who led the research, said in a media statement. “That’s the starting point for our research: how can something that’s defective work in a perfect way?”
In a paper published in the journal Physical Review Research, Kambhampati and his team explain that a phenomenon known as quantum confinement occurs within bulk perovskite crystals. Until now, quantum confinement had only been observed in particles a few nanometres in size – the quantum dots of flatscreen TV fame being one much-vaunted example. When particles are this small, their physical dimensions constrain the movement of electrons in a way that gives the particles distinctly different properties from larger pieces of the same material – properties that can be fine-tuned to produce useful effects such as the emission of light in precise colours.
Using a technique known as state-resolved pump/probe spectroscopy, the researchers have shown a similar type of confinement occurs in bulk caesium lead bromide perovskite crystals. In other words, their experiments have uncovered quantum dot-like behaviour taking place in pieces of perovskite significantly larger than quantum dots.
Although they appear to be solid, perovskites have certain characteristics more commonly associated with liquids because they have an atomic lattice able to distort in response to the presence of free electrons.
These findings have the potential to give rise to a better understanding of how to engineer defect-tolerant optoelectronic materials
Kambhampati draws a comparison to a trampoline absorbing the impact of a rock thrown into its centre. Just as the trampoline will eventually bring the rock to a standstill, the distortion of the perovskite crystal lattice – a phenomenon known as polaron formation – is understood to have a stabilizing effect on the electron.
However, the pump/probe spectroscopy data revealed that, instead of eventual steadiness, there was an overall increase in energy in the aftermath of polaron formation.
“The fact that the energy was raised shows a new quantum mechanical effect, quantum confinement like a quantum dot,” Kambhampati said.
The scientist explained that, at the size scale of electrons, the rock in the trampoline is an exciton, the bound pairing of an electron with the space it leaves behind when it is in an excited state.
“What the polaron does is confine everything into a spatially well-defined area. One of the things our group was able to show is that the polaron mixes with an exciton to form what looks like a quantum dot. in a sense, it’s like a liquid quantum dot, which is something we call a quantum drop. We hope that exploring the behavior of these quantum drops will give rise to a better understanding of how to engineer defect-tolerant optoelectronic materials.”

Competition between redox flow, Li-ion batteries to heat up in next decade – report
A report by IDTechEx states that redox flow battery technology might start to gain field to lithium-ion batteries over the next decade, overtaking the Li-ion battery energy capacity installed by 2031.
By relying on a vanadium, zinc-polyiodide, polysulfide bromide or uranium electrolyte solution held in storage tanks, redox flow batteries can store energy from renewable sources, including solar, wind or wave power, and release it when required.
IDTechEx’s forecast for this energy storage system is based on the fact that the energy scenario is changing as a result of years of green policies adopted by a growing number of countries, with energy storage playing a key role toward the integration of variable renewable energy (VRE) in the power grid.
“The large adoption of variable renewable energy is substantially affecting the grid infrastructure, and more renewables will be installed, so the necessity to adjust and update the power grid will be greater. In fact, variability is one of the issues faced by the power grid,” the report reads. “The advent of VRE implies a variation of the existing grid infrastructure, due to the nature of renewable energy, both wind and solar. The variable and uncertainty of these renewable energy sources exacerbate the flexibility issue of the existing power plant.”
According to IDTechEx, flexibility is defined as the ability of the power system to deal with a higher degree of uncertainty and variability in the supply-demand balance, a characteristic that has existed in power systems from well before the advent of low-cost VRE. However, the market analyst believes that the evolution of its definitions has undoubtedly been driven by the increased adoption of VRE.
Given the need for a steady supply of power that does not stop due to the intermittent nature of the wind and the sun, the researcher says that it foresees a large adoption of redox flow batteries toward the end of the next decade, once the RFB sector gets a solid position on the market, overcoming the strong competition from the well-established Li-ion battery systems.

Cerrejón lifts force majeure caused by blockades
After having declared force majeure due to a couple of blockades taking place since early May, Colombian coal mine Cerrejón informed that it will be gradually resuming operations this week.
In a media statement, Cerrejón said the restart is only possible after having been able to rebuild its fuel inventory once the picket lines blocking its railway and the Bolívar port were lifted.
The railway blockade started on May 5 and was being led by former workers who, according to the miner, were demanding their jobs back and additional compensation. The workers, on the other hand, told local media that they were fired without a cause.
Due to the protest, Cerrejón was not able to mobilize gasoline into the mine so management resorted to tank trucks to move fuel from the port into the operation. However, on May 20, 2021, people from the Media Luna community decided to block the entrance to the port demanding jobs.
The provincial and federal economies lost about $1 million in royalties, taxes and parafiscal payments for each day the mine was not able to operate
The blockades completely hindered the company’s ability to bring in fuel and, therefore, the force majeure had to be declared on May 24, 2021, and all contracts were suspended.
According to Cerrejón, which is owned by BHP Group, Anglo American and Glencore, the provincial and federal economies lost about $1 million in royalties, taxes and parafiscal payments for each day the mine was not able to operate.
On May 27, the blockades were finally removed after the former workers, the community and the miner met with the Ministry of Mines, the Presidential Councillor for Competitiveness, the Ministry of Interior, the General Prosecutor’s Office, the Ombudsman’s Office, the Attorney General’s Office, the Armed Forces, the Governor of La Guajira and the Uribia Mayor.
Once it was able to access both the port and the railway, the miner sent out 60,000 tonnes of coal for export.
Last year, Cerrejón also had to deal with a worker uprising in the form of a three-month strike led by the nearby Wayuu Indigenous community and its largest union.
Built 30 years ago, Cerrejón is an integrated mining and transportation complex that includes an open-pit mine, a 150-kilometre railway line and a Caribbean port. In 2020, the mine produced 12.4 million tonnes of coal, almost 52% less than the output it registered the year before.

Bonanza gold deposits form the same way soured milk does – research
A new study by researchers from Canada’s McGill University states that ultrahigh-grade deposits form in years, months, or even days because the underlying mechanisms that lead to their creation produce an effect similar to that of souring milk.
“Our findings solve the paradox of ‘ultrahigh-grade’ or ‘bonanza’ gold formation, which has frustrated scientists for over a century. The paradox of bonanza gold deposits is that there is simply not enough time for them to form so they should not exist, but they do,” Anthony Williams-Jones, co-author of the study, said in a media statement.
In the paper he wrote together with PhD student Duncan McLeish and other colleagues, the researcher explains that most gold deposits form over millions of years, which is what it takes to fill with gold a single centimetre-wide crack on Earth’s crust once very large volumes of hot water have flowed through it. This is not the case, however, for ultrahigh-grade deposits.
Using an electron microscope to observe particles in thin slices of rock at Pretium Resources’ (TSX, NYSE: PVG) Brucejack mine in northwestern British Columbia, William-Jones and McLeish discovered that pretty much like in the process that turns milk sour, gold colloids – which consist of charged nanoparticles of gold that repel each other – are clumped together but when the charge breaks down, they flocculate to form a jelly. This jelly gets trapped in the cracks of rocks to form ultra high-grade gold veins.

“[Similarly], milk consists of little butterfat particles that are suspended in water because they repel each other, like the negative ends of two magnets. When the milk goes sour the surface charge breaks down, and the particles clump together to form a jelly,” William-Jones pointed out.
According to the scientists, this is the first evidence for gold colloid formation and flocculation in nature and the first images of small veins of gold colloid particles and their flocculated aggregates at the nano-scale.
“These images document the process by which the cracks are filled with gold and, scaled up through the integration of millions of these small veins, reveal how bonanza veins are formed,” William-Jones said. “Our results are important to the mineral exploration and mining industry in Canada and around the world.”
In the scientists’ view, now that the mystery of how bonanza deposits form has been revealed, mineral exploration companies can better explore for them and possibly for other gold deposits.
“We suspect that the colloidal processes that operated at Brucejack and other bonanza gold systems may also have operated to form more typical gold deposits,” William-Jones said. “The challenge will be to find suitable material to test this hypothesis. At Brucejack, the next step will be to better understand the reasons why colloid formation and flocculation occurred on the scale observed and reconstruct the geological environment of these processes. We have also been preparing gold colloids in the lab in an attempt to simulate what we discovered at Brucejack.”
The researcher also said that it is important to carry out genetic studies of Canada’s most fertile metallogenic districts in order to better understand how world-class mineral deposits form, and thereby develop more effective exploration strategies.

Cost of Fortescue’s Iron Bridge project shoots up once again
Fortescue Metals Group (ASX: FMG), the world’s fourth-largest iron ore producer, raised the cost estimate for its Iron Bridge magnetite project to between $3.3 billion and $3.5 billion, the second time this year.
Initially, Iron Bridge was expected to cost $2.6 billion and, prior to this recent hike, its price tag had already risen to around $3 billion.
In February this year, Fortescue’s chief operating officer, Greg Lilleyman, and two other executives resigned following a review of the project that – according to Australian media – showed that its cost had blown out by as much as 25%.
Initially, Iron Bridge was expected to cost $2.6 billion and, prior to this recent hike, its price tag had already risen to around $3 billion
Iron Bridge is located 145 kilometers south of Port Hedland in Western Australia’s Pilbara region. Project development started in 2019 and first production is planned for December 2022. Once it is completed and fully ramped up, it is expected to deliver 22mtpa of high-grade 67% Fe magnetite concentrate product.
The asset includes the North Star and Glacier Valley magnetite ore bodies. Its production, when combined with ore from the company’s Eliwana mine, is expected to increase Fortescue’s product grade and give it the option of delivering the majority of its products at greater than 60% iron, thus meeting China’s demand for high-grade ore.
The project will host a dry crushing and grinding circuit which, according to Fortescue, will deliver globally competitive capital intensity and operating costs.
Iron Bridge is an unincorporated joint venture between Fortescue’s subsidiary FMG Iron Bridge and Formosa Steel IB. Baosteel also has an interest in the project, as a minority shareholder of FMG Iron Bridge.

DRC bans export of cobalt, copper concentrate – Fastmarkets
An order sent to miners in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) on Wednesday has banned the export of copper and cobalt concentrate, according to Fastmarkets.
The data provider said it confirmed with three companies operating copper and cobalt mines in DRC that they all received the notice, signed by Bernard Bosele Pilipilithe provincial director of Customs and Excise in the Katanga province of DRC.
At present, the trucks carrying copper and cobalt concentrate could still pass through the border, and the effective date of the order is not mentioned, sources said.
The order comes on the same week Ivanhoe Mines (TSX: IVN) announced the beginning of production of copper concentrate at its Kamoa-Kakula project in the DRC, months ahead of schedule as the metal continues to trade close to all-time highs.
Kakula, the first mine planned at the concession, is initially forecast to generate 3.8 million tonnes of ore a year at an average feed grade “well in excess of 6% copper” over the first five years of operation, the company said.

Fekola mine operations uninterrupted despite coup in Mali
Following the military takeover that took place on Monday in Mali and the subsequent resignation of the country’s interim president and prime minister on Wednesday, Canadian miner B2Gold Corp. (TSX: BTO) issued a statement saying that mining operations at its Fekola mine have not been affected by the political turmoil.
According to B2Gold, mining and milling activities continue uninterrupted and management does not expect that any operational days will be lost, as its personnel remain safe.
In the media brief, the miner renewed its commitment to producing between 530,000 and 560,000 ounces of gold in 2021 at Fekola, an asset in which the State of Mali has a 20% ownership interest.
B2Gold the miner renewed its commitment to producing between 530,000 and 560,000 ounces of gold in 2021 at Fekola
“B2Gold is committed to working with the governing authorities in Mali in order to build on the strong relationship it has enjoyed to date. The company will continue to work in a transparent manner to ensure the continuation of the positive and mutually beneficial partnership between B2Gold and the Malian government for the benefit of the Malian people and all stakeholders,” the press release states. “This will include a continuation of the ongoing discussions with respect to the renewal of the Menankoto exploration permit, which the company believes it is entitled to receive under proper application of Malian law.”
In the midst of the political crisis, on Wednesday, it was also revealed that Mali’s now-ousted prime minister Moctar Ouane signed an order on May 21, 2021, which cancelled a March 24 decision to give the Menankoto exploration permit to Malian company Little Big Mining SARL, without detailing the reasons behind the annulment.
Prior to this, the government had denied B2Gold’s application for an extension of the Menankoto exploration permit it had obtained through a 2014 acquisition but B2Gold contested the decision, saying it violated its legal rights under both the 2012 Malian Mining Code and the 2019 Malian Mining Code.
The Menankoto permit is located 20 kilometres north of the Fekola mine, which is in southwest Mali on the border with Senegal.

Ivanhoe’s Kamoa-Kakula mine starts copper production
Canada’s Ivanhoe Mines (TSX:IVN) has begun producing copper concentrate at its Kamoa-Kakula project in the Democratic Republic of Congo months ahead of schedule as the metal continues to trade close to all-time highs.
Kakula, the first mine planned at the concession, is initially forecast to generate 3.8 million tonnes of ore a year at an average feed grade “well in excess of 6% copper” over the first five years of operation.
Ivanhoe and partner Zijin Mining said first ore was introduced into the concentrator plant on May 20 to perform initial hot commissioning tests on the ball mills and other processing equipment.
Operations are set to ramp up this year to reach between 80,000 and 95,000 tonnes of copper in concentrate, eventually reaching an annual peak of more than 800,000 tonnes.
As of May 25, 5% to 6% of copper ore was being conveyed directly from Kakula’s underground mining operations to the run-of-mine stockpile and the concentrator, they said.
Operations are set to ramp up this year to reach between 80,000 and 95,000 tonnes of copper in concentrate. After several phases of expansion the mine’s peak annual copper production will be more than 800,000 tonnes.
Ivanhoe’s co-chairperson Robert Friedland, who made his fortune from the Voisey’s Bay nickel project in Canada in the 1990s, has been working on Kamoa-Kakula for ten years.
The mining veteran believes the project will become the world’s second-largest copper mine and also the one with the highest grades among major operations. The concentrator is slated to produce concentrate grading around 57% copper.
The Vancouver-based company has also vowed to produce the industry’s “greenest” copper, as it works to become the first net-zero operational carbon emitter among the world’s top-tier copper producers. Friedland has not seta target date for achieving such goal.
Expansion in sight
Given the current copper price environment, Ivanhoe and Zijin are exploring expanding production capacity from the current 7.6 Mtpa capacity (to be implemented in two phases of 3.8 Mtpa) to 11.4 Mtpa. This may be achieved by adding output from other targets in the concession — Kansoko, Kamoa North (including the Bonanza Zone) and Kakula West.
Kamoa-Kakula is a strategic partnership between Ivanhoe Mines (39.6%), Zijin Mining Group (39.6%), Crystal River Global Limited (0.8%) and the DRC government (20%).

Renewable energy hub at Australian abandoned gold mine closer to becoming reality
A project to host a pumped-hydro power facility at the site of the past-producing Kidston gold mine in Queensland, northern Australia, is closer to becoming a reality.
After a series of delays, Genex Power’s (ALX: GNX) $602-million proposal reached financial close this month and construction is set to begin in the next two months, with operations kicking off in early 2025.
The state of Queensland provided A$147 million in funding support. Other backers of the project are the Northern Australia Infrastructure Facility, Japan Electric Power Development Co 9513.T, and EnergyAustralia.
The 250-megawatt plant would be Australia’s first pumped-hydro facility in nearly 40 years
The 250-megawatt plant would be Australia’s first pumped-hydro facility in nearly 40 years and it is expected to function for at least 80 years. Once it becomes active, it will pump water uphill from an empty, 300 metres-deep mine pit into a second empty pit when energy is abundant and cheap, and release the water to generate power when prices are high.
The entire system is to be complemented with two solar farms totalling 329 megawatts. The farms are expected to generate the necessary power to pump water in the reservoirs to store the energy, besides supplying enough energy to power about 169,000 homes.
Pumped hydro is one of the most affordable and commonly used forms of industrial-scale energy storage globally, accounting for nearly 99% of the market. The technique allows the storage of renewable energy from wind and solar, instantly transmitting it to the grid during periods of peak demand, or in the event of an unplanned network outage.

First Cobalt more than doubles holdings in Idaho
Canada’s First Cobalt (TSX-V:FCC) has more than doubled its holdings in Idaho, US, around what it describes as one of the few primary cobalt deposits in the world, its Iron Creek project.
The expansion, the second in a month, increases the company’s land position to over 1,820 hectares thanks to an earn-in agreement into Phoenix Copper’s (LON: PXC) Redcastle cobalt asset.
Redcastle is next to First Cobalt’s Iron Creek project and east of the Toronto-based miner’s Ruby Zone cobalt-copper prospect.
Earn-in agreement into Phoenix Copper’s Redcastle asset increases the company’s land position in Idaho to over 1,820 hectares.
“We believe this area shows great promise for cobalt and copper mineralization, which would complement our strategy of expanding the Iron Creek deposit and its extensions,” First Cobalt’s president and CEO, Trent Mell, said in the statement.
Phoenix Copper said the earn-in at Redcastle would enable it to focus on its base and precious metals Empire project, also in Idaho.
“This agreement, as well as the progress currently being made at our Empire mine, is supported by a strong macroeconomic environment for the materials required for sustainable energy transition,” Phoenix CEO Ryan McDermott said in a separate statement.
In its previous Idaho deal, First Cobalt increased its land position at Iron Creek by more than 100% by acquiring the West Fork property to the west for a combination of cash and shares.
Iron Creek has an indicated 2.2 million tonne resource at 0.26% cobalt and 0.61% copper, for 12.3 million pounds of cobalt and 29Mlb of copper.
It also has an inferred 2.7Mt at 0.22% cobalt and 0.68% copper for 12.7Mlb and 40Mlb respectively.
Refinery revamp
First Cobalt is looking to develop supply as it moves to commission the expansion of its cobalt refinery in Canada’s Ontario next year.
The company has said the project, which it is carrying out in partnership with mining and commodities trading giant Glencore (LON:GLEN), would help North America reduce its reliance on China.
The country dominates the supply chain for rechargeable lithium-ion batteries and also has two of the world’s top producers of the white metal — Tianqi Lithium and Ganfeng Lithium.
The US government has announced several initiatives to reduce reliance on imports of critical minerals such as cobalt. In April, the Department of Energy’s Critical Materials Institute announced it would give First Cobalt $600,000 over two years for research on mineral processing techniques for Iron Creek.

Tight supply, accelerated EV story to keep lithium prices elevated — report
Market analyst Fitch Solutions expects broad lithium prices to trend higher in 2021 and 2022, as accelerating demand for lithium-ion batteries (Li-ion) and a tight upstream supply keeps prices elevated.
In its latest industry report, Fitch forecasts Chinese lithium carbonate 99.5% to average $13,450/tonne in 2021 and $15,025/tonne in 2022 (compared with $6,375/tonne in 2020), and for Chinese lithium hydroxide monohydrate 56.5% to average $11,950/tonne in 2021 and $14,300/tonne in 2022 (compared with $7,290/tonne in 2020).
In 2021 so far, lithium prices have experienced a significant rally, as post-covid demand for lithium chemicals recovered alongside the automotive industry. This spike intensified during the first two months of the year as Chinese lithium producers, such as Jiangxi Ganfeng, forecast limited supply due to increased downstream demand ahead of the Chinese Lunar New Year.
In line with Fitch’s view, broad lithium prices have since normalised, with Chinese spot prices for battery-grade lithium carbonate and lithium hydroxide exhibiting slower growth compared with January and February 2021.
Chinese spot prices for lithium carbonate 99.5% grew by just 2.0% between the beginning of April and mid-May 2021, compared with 52.2% growth experienced between the beginning of January and the end of February 2021.

Increasing demand for lithium chemicals for use in electric vehicle (EV) batteries and energy storage systems will support elevated prices in the short term, but Fitch does not expect to see any large jumps that would push prices up to the highs observed in 2016 and 2017.
Lithium will be a key beneficiary of the accelerating uptake of EVs over Fitch’s forecast period to 2030, due to its prominent featuring in battery chemistry.
Lithium will be a key beneficiary of the accelerating uptake of EVs over Fitch’s forecast period to 2030, due to its prominent featuring in battery chemistry
Its use in Li-ion batteries of varying cathode chemistries will help insulate demand from technological advances and coinciding changing preferences for cathode chemistries. Hence, lithium will not face the same risks as cobalt and nickel as automakers increasingly use lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) cathodes and opt to minimise cobalt usage.
Fitch’s Autos team forecasts global EV sales to reach over 4.6mn units in 2021, representing year-on-year growth of 50.1%, following growth of 36.8% in 2020, underpinning short-term demand. Global demand forecasts for lithium carbonate equivalent (LCE) are based on the Autos team’s EV sales forecasts, which lean towards the conservative side.
Demand for lithium for battery end-uses outside of EV production will continue to outweigh EV-focused lithium demand in the short term, Fitch predicts, as lithium demand for rising battery swap stations will lead to the number of EV batteries manufactured exceeding the number of vehicles sold.
Outside of the autos sector, utility-scale batteries and energy storage batteries and portable electronics will also contribute to demand. However, as Fitch’s forecast period progresses, lithium demand for EV batteries will account for a larger share of global demand.
In turn, Fitch says, its demand forecasts will become less conservative nearing 2030, when the analyst forecasts that lithium demand for EV batteries will assume a large majority of total global demand. China will continue to lead lithium demand for battery manufacturing, with Germany and the US increasing production capacity in the coming years.

Gold price holds near 4-month peak despite Bitcoin rebound
Gold prices steadied near the highest in more than four months on Monday amid signs that investors are turning more bullish on the precious metal. Declines in the US dollar and bond yields also helped bullion’s appeal.
Spot gold stayed relatively flat, up 0.1% to $1,883.59 an ounce by 1:20 p.m. ET, while US gold futures rose 0.4% to $1,884.60 an ounce.
[Click here for an interactive chart of gold prices]

Gold is coming off three straight weekly gains, closer to wiping out its losses for the year after prices slumped during the January-March period. The precious metal has advanced on wobbles in the greenback and weakening treasury yields, and demand for bullion as a store of value is rising as inflation worries threaten to undercut economic growth.
Over the past week, hedge funds and other large speculators have raised their net-long position in gold futures and options to the highest since January, government data showed Friday. Holdings in exchange-traded funds backed by bullion also climbed in May following three months of outflows.
Investors were also weighing the extreme volatility in Bitcoin – widely viewed as an alternative to gold – which may have lent an added pillar of support. However, the cryptocurrency rebounded from its roller-coaster weekend on Monday, with prices on track for the biggest gain in more than three months.
“Gold prices are trending higher as weakness in cryptocurrencies and rising demand for inflation-hedge assets buoyed the appeal of the precious metal,” Margaret Yang, a strategist at DailyFX, told Bloomberg.
“Recent ETF data showed that investors are stockpiling the yellow metal for the first time since January, underscoring rising appetite.”

“The recent move lower in real rates, accompanied by further US dollar weakness, have been the key drivers of gold’s rebound,” Morgan Stanley analysts led by Susan Bates said in a note on Monday.
“Still, we continue to see a risk of a sharper sell-off similar to that seen in 2013 once tapering begins in 2022, but in our base case we assume price remains supported in the $1,600s per ounce until the first Fed rate hike,” they added.
