Teck suspends smelter due to forest fire smoke

Forest fires and smoke in the interior of British Columbia have forced Teck to temporarily suspend operations yesterday at its smelter in Trail, according to a report S&P Global.

Teck's Trail Operations, one of the world's largest fully integrated zinc and lead smelting and refining complexes, employs 1,400 workers. In 2017 the smelter produced 310,000 tonnes of zinc.

The smelter is not threatened by fire. Rather, poor air quality forced closure of operations. A spokesperson for Teck did not say when the smelter will resume operations.

Smoke from forest fires have hit all areas of British Columbia creating air quality health risk warnings to be issued and cancelling a variety of events.
